Animal Assisted therapy (AAT) involves the use of animals in formal therapy sessions. The presence of a friendly animal helps to ease the client’s anxiety. To name a few benefits, this involvement can also improve social interactions and decrease aggressive behaviors.

At Manav Rehabilitation Centre, the Animal Angels Foundation conducts AAT. Our one-year-old cat, “Simba” is specially trained by Animal Angels Foundation to work with the clients. Simba acts like a co-therapist in individual and group session with the clients. People with mental illnesses and emotional problems tend to have an inward focus. Having Simba around helps them refocus themselves on their environment.

Simba, with his unconditional love and acceptance makes the clients feel fully accepted without the fear of rejection and this helps them to reach outside themselves.

The goal of this process is to improve communication and interaction in interpersonal relationships and with the therapists.

Animal Angels Foundation was started by Rohini Fernandes and Radhika Nair in 2005 to provide animal-assisted therapy services to people with psychiatric disorders, behavioural/emotional problems, developmental disorders, physical disabilities and physical illnesses.

They use specially trained dogs and cats to help adults and children learn new skills, speed up their recovery process and cope with life's day-to- day challenges such as loss, stress, loneliness and illness. For further information on them you can visit www.animalangelsfoundation.com
