What is Bowen Therapy?
Also known as Bowtech - the Original Bowen Technique and Bowenwork, it is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy. Sometimes
called the “homeopathy of bodywork,” it utilizes subtle inputs to the body (known as “moves”), stimulating the body to heal itself, often
It is a dynamic technique of muscle and connective tissue release that has started a revolution in health care.
This therapy has been used successfully for over 40 years and has helped thousands of patients. It is based on principles and practices developed
by Australian Tom Bowen, beginning almost 50 years ago.
The Bowen therapy uses only gentle moves but yields outstanding results that even the classical medicine circles have taken notice.
The amazing feature of Bowen therapy is a series of precise, gentle, painless pressure moves, which are applied over clothing, which improve energy
flow in the body and aid in self-healing. The healing may occur at all levels as needed: physical, chemical, emotional, mental, energetic,
Most important of all, it is safe for everyone from newborns to the elderly. The Bowen therapy regains the body's state of balance, allows for
natural regeneration and releases muscle tension.
In the case of psychological problems, often anxiety, depression and intense stress are improved. Patients report feelings that a burden has been
taken off of their backs, they begin to see their problems more clearly and their stressful lives become easier to manage. Initial outcomes include
increased vocalization, calmer behaviour, improved concentration and comprehension and improved head control and balance. Bowen Technique
consistently reduces the patient’s level of anxiety, tension, anger, depression, fatigue and confusion.
Bowen Therapy at Manav Rehabilitation Centre
Initially the therapy was offered to twelve clients with chronic mental illness such as Schizophrenia, Manic Depression, Chronic Depression,
Personality Disorders, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders for a period of six months, the general symptoms being aggression, anger outbursts, mood
swings and lethargy. The aim was to find out in which cases this therapy helps most. Positive results were noticed in almost all the cases. The
therapy has been able to help rid muscular tension and relieved the clients of the continuous pain they endured due to side effects of psychiatric
medication. Moreover, regular sessions also benefited those clients who suffered from migraine, sinusitis, acidity , and even
This therapy also worked wonderfully with a particular client’s pattern of “aggression”. It was noticed that partaking in the Bowen Therapy
sessions regularly has generated an increase in the time span between a trigger as perceived by him and his reaction, facilitating “thinking”
Most beneficial to all clients is the therapy’s “de-stress” effect, which enables the clients to focus on cognitively engaging sessions in a
fruitful manner, ultimately leading to their significant role in their own rehabilitation in various ways. To illustrate, Bowen Therapy has
subtly worked on the confidence levels of individual clients as well. The clients who prior to partaking in Bowen Therapy sessions were unable to
speak up in public due to extreme anxiety, were, post- Bowen Therapy, found to be more confident and relaxed, not just within the group but even
when on stage. The focus and confidence has made them more active which further is helping some of them to prosper in their newly found
Based on these findings, it was decided to extend Bowen Therapy it to all the clients of Manav Rehabilitation Centre.
Over the last three years of continuously working with the clients of the Manav Rehabilitation centre, we have seen a marked improvement in
a lot of clients in the areas like focus, concentration, physical ailments, epilepsy, and mood swings. The qualities of Bowen therapy, along with
other inputs and interventions, has helped the process of recovery and thus aids the overall integration process, enabling the foundation to
achieve it’s objective.
